“On one occasion during the attack on fire 720 we had switched to the clay retardant from the Gel while trying to hold a 40-60 hectare flare up that was running up a very steep slope. The flare up was being held with gel and 30 minutes after the switch to red clay we began to lose the battle and the pilots in the heavy machines requested to switch back to the gel. We did switch them back to gel and the flare up was under control again in no more than 30 minutes.”
